Known for his objectivity as a reporter, broadcaster Bill Brown
has been the Astros’ primary play-by-play voice on television
since 1987. Brown came to the Astros after working as the senior
producer and anchor of the Financial News Network's SCORE program.
Prior to that assignment, Brown served as Sports Director of the
Sports Time Cable Network, which televised selected games of the
Reds, Royals, and Cardinals. Brown also spent one year with HSE
in Pittsburgh, and worked as the television voice of the Cincinnati
Reds from 1976–82.
A graduate of the University of Missouri, Brown began his broadcasting
career in San Antonio at WOAI-TV. After a military stint he moved
to Cincinnati and joined the sports staff at WLWT-TV.
In 1987, Brown joined the Astros as the primary television play-by
play-announcer, a post he has held continuously since that time.
His pleasing voice and style have made him a Houston favorite
ever since.
In spite of his reputation as a stickler for detail, and one
who uses statistics to support his observations whenever possible,
"Brownie" has a nice intuitive feel for what his viewers
need to know—and for when they need a dose of his wry humor.
Bill is a member of SABR, a solid baseball historian, and a superb
writer.
In addition to making strong contact with his TV audience, Bill
Brown is respected as one of baseball’s best announcers
when it comes to communicating with the players he covers. In
brief, Bill Brown is best described as a true professional behind
the microphone—one who is most deserving of the honor accorded
him here tonight.
Bill Brown and his wife, Diane, reside in Houston. They have
one daughter, Allison, and a grandson, Luke.
